I use to be very proud of my bloodline with St Andrews, its Golf and The R&A – however today I am appalled by the gross arrogance that emanates out of the place.

The R&A as well as the Links Trust appear to betray everything that was once good about the town, its people and its golf. The final betrayal being that the Links Trust believe the name of the founding father of the modern game of golf is no long worthy to be displayed over his shop front which has been there since the late 1860’s – that’s over a 150 years. To replace the name Tom Morris with The Open just beggars belief – One main reason not to call Old Toms’ shop The Open is that the Open only comes to St Andrews once every 5 years, while Tom’s name has been omnipresent for 152 years. The other Links Trust St Andrews course are no good enough, to host The Open, showing the real quality of the Links Trust management skills.
The history of the shop circulates around the name of Morris not The Open, the lockers recently found relate to the history of Old Tom not The Open and what on earth is the Links Trust doing in playing with a name that it has no business with whatsoever, remembering that only one of its courses is used for The Open and that was because it was for the most part re modelled and redesigned by none other than Old Tom.

Clearly history is no longer appreciated in St Andrews, its to be flaunted, I would say prostituted in the hope of making money, yet to this individual the very idea of whitewashing the name of St Andrews greatest son from his famous shop is nothing short of utter betrayal of everything that made the name St Andrews synonymous with golf.

All those involved in this action should hold their heads in shame for tolerating such blatant betrayal and the Links Trust Trustees should resign for nothing short than plain stupidity.

    Melvyn,

Great job! I posted this article on our twitter page! I’m going to buy some Scottish ale tonight in Old Tom’s honor!
